Talking Matters offer a range of innovative programs that support and extend the standard clinical therapy sessions. As some skills are learned or consolidated best in a group environment, you are able to access a range of exciting group options for intensive intervention each school holiday period.  Groups help children learn from each other, in a motivating and highly relevant manner. Information about a range of programs offered at Talking Matters is provided below.

Intensive School Holiday Programs

The dates for the next scheduled intensive group programs are available below and you are able to apply for inclusion in these groups below now!   Numbers for these groups are limited and places are offered to children based on suitability following completion of the registration process. Groups run on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays in school holidays. Sessions are run at Church 4 You, 3 Kirk Street, Elizabeth Park. Children must be available to attend all sessions to enrol.  

Times for each program are provided below.

Dates for the July Program:

11th, 12th, 14th, 18th, 19th, 21st of July 2017.

Dates for the October Program:

3rd, 4th, 6th, 10th, 11th, 13th of October 2017.

* Sessions missed are not able to be funded by NDIA. Missed sessions will need to be funded by parents, as we are unable to cover the costs of providing the program unless all children are in attendance each week. 

IMG 1491Social Skills Programs 

Social skills programs provide social skill learning opportunities in small groups. Groups of four to five children will be led by an allied health professional and at least one assistant. All students need good language skills, reasonable attention and behaviour, and to be attending mainstream schools.

Groups focus on teaching and practicing the following skills with age appropriate activities: 

  • making and keeping friends
  • managing emotions and dealing appropriately with feelings, anxiety, worry and isolation
  • recognising social cues and managing reactions to losing games or things not going their way
  • meeting people and exiting interactions appropriately

The cost of this group is $585 plus purchase of the purple What's the Buzz book at approximately $85 is recommended. This cost includes 9 hours of group time, plus 1 hour parent session.

The cost of this group is $760.50 plus purchase of the yellow What's the Buzz book at approximately $85 is recommended. This cost includes 12 hours of group time plus 1 hour parent session.

High School Social Skills Program Oct groups at 3.00 to 5.00pm Download High School Social Skills brochure here.

The cost of this group is $760.50 plus purchase of the What's the Buzz book is recommended but this group also uses some other resources suitable for older children. This cost includes 12 hours of group time, plus one hour parent session.

This small group program has been developed for preschool aged children who can speak in sentences and are showing an interest in other children. The group will consist of either four children with their parents and one of the health professionals, or eight children and their parents, an OT, a speech pathologist and assistants. This program will run in July 2017.

  • learning to play, take turns and share toys with other children
  • learning to communicate with peers
  • practicing completing activities in a group setting,
  • developing pretend play skills

The cost of this group is $526.50 and includes 9 hours of intervention.

IMG 6261Handwriting and Typing Skills

Difficulty with handwriting can lead to avoidance of writing tasks and trouble communicating knowledge at school. Supporting your children to master handwriting foundation skills early will support their self-esteem, confidence, motivation and academic achievement.

Skills taught include:

  • pencil grasp (if appropriate), letter fomation, placement and spacing of letters and words on a page

This group has been develop to assist school aged children aged 5 to 7 years. The cost of this group is $550.50 including book of exercises and 9 hours of group work. 

Senior Handwriting October groups at 10.00am to 11.30am Download Handwriting brochure.

For children aged 8 years and over in mainstream schools. The cost of this group is $550.50 including book of exercises and 9 hours of group work. 

Touch Typing  October groups at 12.00 pm to 1.00 pm Download Touch Typing brochure.

This group is useful for students who have difficulty producing legible handwriting quickly enough to show their knowledge. Students will need to bring their own laptops with specific software downloaded prior to the groups.  Purchase cost of the software is approximately$30.00 which is funded by parents separately to the group costs.  A link will be provided to families who are accepted for the program.

The group focuses on:

  • developing proficiency in touch typing for high school students including correct hand positioning, speed and accuracy.

The cost of this group is $351.00 plus purchase of software to be downloaded prior to group at cost of approximately $30.00. Group includes 6 hours of contact.

IMG 7104Food School for Fussy Eaters

Food school is a fun way for fussy and problem eaters to explore and learn about new foods. These groups are led by clinicians who have completed SOS feeding training. There are groups for are range of ages running in both the October 2016 and January 2017 holidays. To participate in the group children need to be able to sit at a small table, sit with others, follow simple instructions and imitate models.

This group is for preschool and reception students.

This program is designed for school aged children who are experiencing food difficulties.

This program is for students in year 4 or above at school. 

Suitable for children who have difficulties with:

    • chewing or moving food around in the mouth, exploring, or trying new foods
    • taking long times to complete small meals, having a restricted diet
    • having sensory preferences towards / away from certain foods 

Cost of Food School groups are $687.45 each and includes 6 hours of groups with children, and 2 hours of parent groups, plus a 45 minute individual intake session. $20 for food is payable by parents prior to group starting.

Self care skills such as dressing and grooming can be challenging for many children. These groups are led by an occupaitonal therapist and focus on children's individual needs in relation to developing independence with dressing, doing up buttons, zips and shoelaces, washing hands and face, brushing teeth and hair. To participate in the group children need to be aged over four years, participate in a group with other children, follow simple instructions and imitate models.

Both fine and gross motor skillscan be challenging for many children and are important for peer relationships and success at school. These groups are led by an occupational therapist and focus on developing children's fine and gross motor skills including balance, movement and ball skills as well as eye hand coordination, tool use and prewriting skills. To participate in the group children need to be aged over four years, participate in a group with other children, follow simple instructions and imitate models.

Difficulties with learning literacy are common in children with speech, language and developmental issues. Literacy impacts on all other aspects of learning at school and intervention in the early years has been shown to be effective in reducing long term impact. This group aims to teach foundation language and literacy skills to children in reception and year one who are not progressing as quickly as their peers.

Suitable for children who have difficulties with:

    • learning early reading, writing and spelling skills
    • developing phonological awareness skills such as identifying, segmenting and blending sounds in words
