Case Study - Casey's experience with TM's social & emotional group program

Casey attended the October 2018 Talking Matters “Social and Emotional” group program. This program was designed based on feedback from families who were wanting more opportunities for their children to generalise their social skills in a safe space for learning and growing with peers.

Casey is 10 years of age and and has been diagnosed with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). She attends regular occupational therapy with Talking Matters and is supported by a psychologist at another location. Casey’s father registered her for the group program in the hope that she would gain a better understanding of her emotions, while also building on her social skills.

Following the group program, Casey is now more open to talking about her emotions. She is using strategies such as deep breathing even though she was resistant to try in the past. Casey has even been teaching her family and other therapists about “The Zones of Regulation Curriculum” and the strategies she learnt.

Casey is looking forward to attending more group programs in the future.

Talking Matters are offering Social and Emotional Groups in January and July 2019. Interested in finding out more information about this group program?

* Please note that Casey is not this child's real name and a stock image has been used to protect her identity. Her story has been shared with the consent of her family.
